Gabe was tied up at work, so I made a quick trip out to Dora Andrews’s house to talk with her about her turmeric situation.

I was struck by the vibrant colors surrounding Dora’s small home. The house was painted a soft shade of blue, almost like the color of the sky on a clear day and was accented by white trim around the windows and a pink front door. The front yard was meticulously landscaped with neat rows of pink, red, yellow, purple, and white flowers in full bloom, including lavender, roses, and daisies. It smelled like the flower shop on Main Street.

A basket of bright red petunias hung from the porch roof and swayed gently in the breeze. Two rocking chairs sat on both sides of the door. They were painted a cheerful shade of yellow, with soft cushions in a floral print. A small wooden table sat between the chairs, holding a vase of freshly picked wildflowers, adding to the homey feel of her home. It was truly adorable.

"Abby, it's so good to see you!" Dora exclaimed, giving me a warm hug. "What brings you over?"

I smiled, taking a seat at her kitchen table. "I know you’ve had some issues about your chili recipe and what’s happening in town. I wanted to come and talk to you about it.”

I worried she would swap out her cheery attitude for a negative, defensive one, but she didn’t.

Dora laughed, shaking her head. "Oh, those silly rumors! I did use a bit of turmeric in my chili at the cook-off, but I promise you, I didn't use a full bottle, and even if I did, turmeric doesn’t cause hexes. Everyone’s just trying to find a reason for what’s going on."

I breathed a sigh of relief, glad to hear she wasn’t concerned. "I feel exactly like you do, but I wanted to make sure I understood your situation so I can stop the rumors before they go crazy.”

Dora nodded, her expression turning serious. "I understand their concerns, but I assure you, the turmeric was just for flavor. I have a family recipe that calls for a small amount of it, and it really does give the chili a unique taste."

I nodded, understanding the importance of family recipes and tradition. "Would you be willing to share the recipe with me?”

“Are you going to share it with everyone?”

“I wasn’t planning on it, but if I have to, would that be okay?”

Dora smiled, reaching for a small notepad on the kitchen counter. "Of course, though I hope you’ll try not to.”

I promised to try my hardest to keep the recipe between us and watched as Dora jotted down the ingredients and cooking instructions.

"Thank you, Dora," I said, tucking the recipe into my bag. "I'm sure it's going to be delicious."

Dora grinned, walking me to the door. "Anytime, Abby. And don't let those silly rumors get to you. We witches have to stick together, you know."

“We sure do.”
